Rovos Rail - The Most Luxurious Train in the World

Step aboard Rovos Rail, the world’s most luxurious train in the world as some of the most varied scenery unfolds before you.

The wood panelled sleeper coaches offer every modern convenience and comfort of the highest standard. The suites accommodate one or two passengers with the option of double or twin beds. All have en-suite facilities, tea facilities, safes, air conditioning, linen and amenities.

Day 1: Cape Town

16:00: Depart from Cape Town Station. Trundle through the winelands of the Western Cape towards Worcester.

16:30: Tea in the lounge and observation cars.

19:30: Dinner is served in the dining cars. The train climbs ±750m up the face of the escarpment. Dress: Formal.

Overnight on board.

Please note: Around midnight, the train arrives at the first of four tunnels on the pass. The last tunnel is 13.5 km long so guests are to be careful if walking through the train.

Day 2: Matjiesfontein

7:00: Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00.

8:00: Disembark at Matjiesfontein for an opportunity to stroll through the historic village. Of special interest is the museum on the platform and a collection of historic cars and railway carriages to the right of the Lord Milner Hotel. The train travels through the Karoo, a vast semi-desert region that was once an enormous inland sea. Over millions of years, volcanic matter was ground down and deposited as silt upon the seabed to form what geologists call the Karoo system.

13:00: Lunch is served in the dining cars.

16:30: Tea in the lounge and observation cars.

19:30: Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal.

Day 3: Kimberley

6:00: Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 8:30.

8:30: Enjoy a tour of Kimberley’s Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Capital of the Northern Cape, Kimberley is well known for the discovery of diamonds that led to its establishment in 1871.

12:00: Lunch is served in the dining cars. The train travels northeast towards the broad grassland plains of the Highveld.

16:30: Tea in the lounge and observation cars.

19:30: Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal.

Overnight on board.

Day 4: *Pretoria

7:00: Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 9:30.

10:00: *Disembark at Kookrus Station (100 km south of Rovos Rail Station). An optional complimentary transfer (90 min) from Kookrus Station to Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria is available.

End of Tour.

Day 1: Pretoria

18:00: Depart Rovos Rail Station, Pretoria. Freshen up in your suite before joining fellow travellers in the lounge car or observation car at the rear of the train. Travel through Warm baths (Bela-Bela) - so named for its mineral waters - and Nylstroom (Modimolle), christened by the Voortrekkers as the source of the Nile River as the town’s river happened to be north flowing. Pass the edge of the escarpment where the Highveld drops precipitously.

20:00: Dinner is served in the dining cars enroute to Polokwane. Dress: Formal.

Overnight on board.

Note: Please ensure the Train Manager or Administration Deputy is in possession of your passport.

Day 2: At Leisure on Board. Border: Musina, South Africa – Beitbridge, Zimbabwe

7:00: Breakfast is served in the dining cars. The train crosses the Tropic of Capricorn enroute to Louis Trichardt.

13:00: Lunch is served in the dining cars. Border formalities with South Africa.

16:30: Tea in the lounge and observation cars. The train crosses the Limpopo River enroute to Beitbridge for border formalities with Zimbabwe. In Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories, the ‘Elephant’s Child’ departs his family for the “great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever-trees, to find out what the Crocodile has for dinner.”

19:30: Dinner is served in the dining cars enroute to Gwanda. Dress: Formal.

Overnight on board.

Day 3: Matobo National Park

6:00: Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 9:00. The train travels baobab country and ascends to Bulawayo, second city of Zimbabwe, capital of Matabeleland and industrial capital of the country.

12:00: Lunch is served in the dining cars.

13:30: Transfer (±45 min) to Matobo National Park to see bushmen caves, rock art and the grave of Cecil John Rhodes. Depart for Sawmills.

18:00: Return to the train and freshen up.

19:30: Dinner is served in the dining cars. Dress: Formal.

Overnight on board.

Day 4: Hwange National Park

7:00: Breakfast is served in the dining cars until 10:00. The train travels between Gwaai and Dete along one of the world’s longest stretches of straight railway line - 114 kilometres - and along the eastern edge of Hwange Park.

13:00: Lunch is served in the dining cars.

15:00: Enjoy a game drive in Hwange National Park, the nation’s largest wildlife area at 1 462 000ha.

19:30: Dinner is served in the dining cars enroute to Thompsons Junction. Dress: Formal.

Overnight on board.

Day 5: Victoria Falls

7:00: Please ensure your luggage is ready for collection 15 minutes before departing and that you have your passport. Breakfast until 9:30. The observation car will be leading the train - a different aspect that rail enthusiasts enjoy.

10:00: Arrive at journey’s end at the incomparable Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
