The Brahmaputra River is one of the world’s great waterways, stretching 2,948 km and ranking among the top 10 globally in terms of discharge, with a flow of 19,200 cubic litres per second. Such is its vastness that it was even visible from space during the Apollo missions. Originating in central Tibet, the river flows through the dramatic Tsangpo gorges before entering Assam, then continues through Bangladesh and the Sundarbans Delta, where it merges with the Ganges River and empties into the Bay of Bengal.
Although less navigated today, the river once supported steamer services up to Dibrugarh during colonial times. In some stretches, it can be as wide as 20 miles, and during the monsoon, it floods much of the Assam plains. The surrounding region, particularly East Bengal, is known for receiving some of the highest rainfall in the world.
